Left and TMC leaders who were present said it was certainly a political dinner without political talks . It was a political dinner. But there were no political talks. It was a show of strength by the non-BJP parties a Left leader told PTI. It was a political dinner but there were no political talks. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi will host leaders of 17 Opposition parties at her New Delhi residence on Tuesday as the Congress moves ahead ambitiously to forge a united alliance to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party s (BJP) might. Sources close to the Congress confirmed that Tuesday s dinner could signify the coming together of all Opposition parties who would take on the BJP inside and outside Parliament. It would not only be a dinner but also showcase the strength of Opposition parties who would like to come together to form a front against the misrule of BJP a senior leader said. The Congress leader said a missive was sent to West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee but she is yet to confirm. TMC-Congress tie-up for Rajya Sabha polls Sonia Gandhi will host leaders of 17 Opposition parties at her New Delhi residence on Tuesday. PTI Things do look good for an alliance with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after the party accepted Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi s nomination for Rajya Sabha polls. West Bengal sends five candidates to the Upper House of Parliament and Banerjee it was earlier said had prepared five TMC candidates names for all seats. However after Congress requested for a seat with Sonia herself putting in a request she accepted Singhvi s nomination. Banerjee s presence at the meeting will be critical because the TMC brings with it 34 MPs one of the biggest constituents of a possible Third Front. The TMC s tally in Lok Sabha is behind only the Congress 44 MPs and AIADMK s 37 parliamentarians. However what this does mean is that the Left parties formerly an ally of the Congress are now left in the cold. As reported by Firstpost in an earlier article the Congress-TMC alliance can contribute up to 35-38 Lok Sabha seats which gives it more heft as compared to a Congress-Left alliance. DMK not AIADMK The AIADMK is unlikely to align forces with Sonia Gandhi especially because the Congress is still allies with the DMK. And no amount of common hatred for BJP is enough to bring DMK and AIADMK together. The DMK has confirmed its presence at Tuesday s meeting with MK Kanimozhi being deputed to attend the dinner. Interestingly DMK working president MK Stalin spoke on the phone with Banerjee a couple of days ago and the topic of a joint front to counter the BJP was on the agenda. However a report on The Times of India said that Stalin is likely to be preoccupied in Chennai and Kanimozhi will be the party s representative in Delhi. Banerjee wanted the DMK to coordinate with other regional parties too. She feels comfortable working with the DMK. Banerjee suggested that all federal parties stay in touch and work cohesively as a bloc a DMK leader was quoted as saying in the report. The report suggested further that Sonia s plan to invite Opposition parties may have come about following talks of a Third Front a non-BJP non-Congress alliance of parties. The Congress may end up the bigger loser in case a Third Front does materialise as it s running short of regional allies and numbers to take on the BJP s might. Who will lead the alliance And if getting a disparate set of parties with no common ground linking them other than an opposition to the BJP s brand of politics wasn t hard enough it will be harder still to unite them on the issue of who will lead the alliance. The Congress by virtue of being the oldest and most established party will want for itself the honour of leading the alliance. However this is unlikely to go down well with others especially parties who have made their fortunes on a staunchly anti-Congress plank. Especially parties like Mamata Banerjee s Trinamool Congress who had broken ties with the UPA publicly in 2012 is unlikely to go back to the fold unless she is offered the chance to lead the alliance. Or even the AIADMK the largest non-BJP constituent of the Lok Sabha currently. Although not allied with either the BJP or the Congress the AIADMK is in a position of such numerical strength that it s likely to demand it s fair share of the spoils. A period of churn Sonia Gandhi s efforts to unite parties who might appear not to have much common ground will cap off a period of great churn in Indian politics. Long-time BJP ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has pulled out of the government. And though it remains part of the NDA continued delay in granting special status to Andhra Pradesh may cause it to pull out of the alliance altogether. A report on India Today said the Congress is eyeing the TDP and has invited its leaders to be part of Tuesday s dinner and also to explore the possibility of being in an anti-BJP alliance with other like-minded parties. TDP is miffed with the way BJP has treated them. We have extended invitations to them too. It is a step towards strengthening the fight against BJP and anyone who agrees with common minimum agenda of ours is welcome a senior Congress leader said. Even in Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has called for the emergence of a Third Front. On the Telangana Rashtra Samiti s (TRS) Foundation Day on 27 April Rao is reportedly planning to announce the alliance and is even planning to bring together other national leaders who are opposed to both Congress and BJP. The Congress would need the TRS to halt its plans of organising a Third Front and if possible to align its fortunes with its own plans of forging an anti-BJP alliance. In Jharkhand the Congress has already stitched together an alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) last week with JMM president Hemant Soren agreeing to support Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls while the Congress will lend a hand to JMM in the Lok Sabha and Jharkhand Assembly polls both scheduled for 2019. Uttar Pradesh India s most populous and most electorally critical state has already witnessed an unprecedented coming together of bitter rivals Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for by-elections held this week. SP and BSP who have traditionally been the two primary parties of Uttar Pradesh politics were both left annihilated by the BJP juggernaut in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and also the 2017 Assembly polls. The BJP won 73 out of the state s 80 Lok Sabha seats while the SP managed five. The BSP failed to even open its account. The one-sided victory was repeated three years later when the BJP won 312 out of 403 Assembly seats while the SP and BSP managed 47 and 19 respectively. It s fairly evident from these numbers that the two parties are facing a battle for their mere survival. The election winning machine that is the BJP has been so powerful in India s largest state that the two have been left with no option but to join hands. While it is only for the two by-elections thus far success in them could lay down a template for the future. And if the Congress can join them there could be the possibility of a Mahagathbandhan -like grand alliance in the works. And it was one such Mahagathbandhan comprising RJD JD(U) and the Congress that dealt the last major defeat to the BJP when it defeated the saffron party in Bihar in 2015. Can Sonia and Co. conjure up the numbers for another? With inputs from agencies
It seems that for Congress Sonia Gandhi the number of parties represented at her dinner table is far more important than what substance they bring to the Opposition unity movement against the BJP-led NDA ahead of the 2019 General Elections. For nothing else can explain her decision to not invite parties that matter in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The two states taken together account for 42 MPs in Parliament. Right alliances in these very states could help swing fortunes in Congress favour in 2019. While the Grand Old Party is boasting of the possible presence of representatives of 17 parties at Sonia s dinner no political party of import in Andhra and Telangana Chandrababu Naidu s TDP K Chandrashekhar Rao s TRS Jaganmohan Reddy s YSR Congress and Asaduddin Owaisi s AIMIM has been considered worth an invite by the former party president. File image of Sonia Gandhi. PTI In 2004 it was Andhra Pradesh that had contributed the most in scripting a historic win for Congress and defeat for Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA. Out of the 42 seats available of the then united Andhra Pradesh Congress on its own had won 29. With allies which included TRS it won 34 seats. The party under the charismatic leadership of YS Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) further increased its tally in 2009 to 33 on its own enabling the Congress-led UPA to return to power with an improved overall tally. Things changed for Congress in the state after YSR died in a chopper crash in September 2009 and then ahead of 2014 when Congress strategists went for a hurried bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to create the new state of Telangana. Telangana was a long-standing demand championed by TRS and the Congress under the leadership of Sonia thought that bifurcation would help boost its electoral prospects which otherwise had dwindled. The manner in which the Manmohan Singh government chose to create Telangana out of united Andhra left people and parties in both the states complaining of marginalisation. The parliamentary poll results of 2014 proved that the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh made Sonia and Congress hated figures in both the states. The Congress scored zero in 25 seats of Andhra and could manage to win only two of 17 seats in Telangana. Things have not improved for the Congress since. In fact a number of party leaders over the last four years have deserted to other parties in the two states. The list of invitees for Sonia s dinner shows that Congress leadership has not learnt its lessons nor is it inclined to take a step forward to mend its ways. Why Sonia didn t invite Naidu is understandable to an extent though the TDP has pulled out two of its ministers from the Narendra Modi government at the Centre it continues to be a part of the NDA. The Congress looks up to Naidu as its prospective ally post-2019 elections just as it was eyeing Nitish Kumar in Bihar as its prospective ally in 2013-14. But then there is a difference. While Nitish was still part of the NDA and was running the coalition government with the BJP the Congress had started sending overt feelers to him since 2012. Whereas in Naidu s case the Congress prospective alliance with him and his party TDP is only in the minds of Congress leaders. Party president Rahul Gandhi s support for TDP s demand of special category status to Andhra Pradesh means nothing. Optics apart the TDP realises follies of his promise for the Congress was the party in power when the state was bifurcated the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his statement had mentioned special category status to Andhra but was never mentioned in the Act. It is indeed difficult to understand why Sonia left out TRS YSRCP and AIMIM. Let s take up the possible reasons one by one. Reddy s YSRCP has a huge support base in Andhra Pradesh and also in parts of Telangana. Reddy the son of YSR was essentially a Congressman and parted ways with Congress to form his own party when he thought the party his father nurtured in the state would not give him his due. Reddy though is sympathetic to Modi but is not part of the NDA. The Congress could have persuaded him to join hands with the party where his political DNA rests. Telangana chief minister and TRS chief Chandrashekhar has openly come out against Modi and the BJP. He is also an old ally of the Congress. In fact in the UPA-I government Manmohan had called him a Yogi in politics . Perhaps the Congress is wary of the independent posturing Chandrashekhar is now trying to create by reigniting his proposal for a Third Front as an alternative to both BJP and Congress and his desire to lead that prospective formulation. Yet another erstwhile Congress ally Owaisi has also not been invited. Owasi has a substantive following in Muslims in the state and amongst the younger Muslim community across the nation. But the Congress is perhaps wary of aligning with him again. It should be noted that at the recently held India Today conclave Sonia had suggested that Rahul was visiting so many temples to dispel the notion that Congress was a Muslim party . Interestingly the Indian Union Muslim League has been invited but not Owaisi. This is perhaps because Owaisi evokes a much stronger response from the Hindu community which is why Congress is wary of inviting him to the high table photo-op. The list of leaders and parties invited include one-member-MLA parties and a one or even zero-member-MP party; but for wider public perception the headcount makes an impression. Sonia s previous bid for Opposition unity or her lunch diplomacy during last year s presidential and vice-presidential elections didn t have any lasting impact. In fact while that so-called Opposition unity move was in motion Nitish deserted the Sonia camp to rejoin the NDA. Since then the Congress alliance with the Samajwadi Party has fallen apart. Samajwadi Party realised that its alliance with Congress was detrimental to its electoral health and dumped the party in the recent in bypolls to two parliamentary constituencies to join hands with the BSP.
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will host a dinner today which is likely to be attended by leaders of 17 opposition parties amid talk of forging a broader front against the BJP-led NDA ahead of the 2019 general elections. According to Congress sources leaders of Andhra Pradesh s ruling Telugu Desam Party which recently pulled out its ministers in the Modi government but continues to be a constituent of the NDA BJD and the TRS have not been invited. They said former chief ministers of Jharkhand Babulal Marandi of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha and Hemant Soren (JMM) will attend the dinner along with former Bihar chief minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha chief Jitan Ram Manjhi who recently quit the NDA and joined forces with Lalu Prasad s RJD which is an ally of the Congress. Lalu s son and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav is also likely to attend but there was no immediate confirmation. Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay DMK s Kanimozhi and Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party are likely to be present and so would be leaders of left parties - CPI-M s Sitaram Yechury and CPI s D Raja. Leaders of other parties like JD-S and Kerala Congress Indian Union Muslim League Revolutionary Socialist Party and RLD are also likely to attend. Sources said while BSP has been invited its leader Mayawati may not send a representative as her party has aligned with JD-S for the Karnataka polls likely in April/March this year. The dinner being hosted at the 10 Janpath residence of Sonia Gandhi is expected to set the tone for opposition unity in the run up to the next general elections. Sonia Gandhi has called for opposition unity and said parties should set aside their minor differences to get together in the larger interest of keeping the BJP out of power in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

NEW DELHI: Congress functionary Sonia Gandhi will host a dinner for opposition parties on Tuesday in what is seen as a step towards trying to forge an anti-BJP alliance ahead of the 2019 elections. However Nationalist Congress Party of Sharad Pawar too plans to call the opposition camp for talks this month which the Maharashtra outfit claims will attract a better star cast. Congress will also be invited to the discussion. The proposed back-to-back shows by Congress and NCP give the impression of a tussle within the opposition to claim leadership of the anti-BJP camp. Reflecting the dissonance Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee recently launched consultations with regional parties to form a federal front and even offered its leadership to Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K Chandrasekhara Rao. For Sonia s dinner all 17 opposition parties which have been attending consultations to adopt a common strategy in Parliament and outside against BJP as last happened on February 1 have confirmed attendance. In fact there are two additions to the group in the form of Jeetan Ram Manjhi of Bihar and Babulal Marandi of Jharkhand. Mamata is pre-occupied and according to Congress sources had conveyed in advance that she would not be able to travel to the capital in mid-March. Party MP Sudip Bandopadhyay is likely to represent her at the meeting. The chief minister is slated to be on a tour of north Bengal districts as that had been scheduled much in advance a TMC MP told TOI. Pawar meanwhile has confirmed his visit to 10 Janpath. However NCP leaders said they were confident that Mamata would come for the meeting called by Pawar around the month-end. They are also extending an invitation to Rao of TRS.

The BJD and TRS rule Odisha and Telangana respectively.
